The Friends of the Children’s Room of Pike County Public Library is a membership organization open to all children and their families who use Pike County Public Library services. FCR was founded in 1996 with a mission to supplement the personnel and funding for children’s library services across the county.
The FCR is led by area teenagers who volunteer their time and talents to enhancing the children’s programs and resources at Pike County Public Library. The Friends of the Children’s Room Committee meets several times during the summer as they work on the Summer Reading Program and throughout the fall and winter while its members are attending middle and high school. The committee members, ranging in age from 12 -19, plan events and coordinate fundraising efforts. The committee’s executive branch is voted in yearly in accordance with its by-laws, and all actions taken by the organization are first approved by the Pike County Public Library Director. A volunteer adult advisor serves as a Liaison between the library and the organization.
For a small donation, members of the community join Friends of the Children’s Room on an annual basis. The membership offers them increased communication through the FCR, invitations to special FCR sponsored events, and the knowledge that they are part of an organization that is helping to increase childhood literacy and aiding in the development of a lifelong love of reading for our young PCPL card holders.
FCR works with library staff and local businesses to fulfill Pike County Public Library’s mission in providing a lifetime of learning. Our moto is “A Lilfetime of Learning Begins Here.”
In the 12 years of its existence the FCR members painted the Children’s Room and purchased the carpeting that is presently in the Children’s Room. They have donated over one hundred books to the collection, stuffed animals for the Milford Branch, and an air conditioner, a clock and a CD player for children’s programs. This year the FCR is donating 6 Big Books to be used in the Baby and Toddler Lapsit Programs.
Every year FCR sponsors a Summer Registration Party, the Summer Kick Off Event and an End of the Summer Party. They also plan and execute special events such as the Harry Potter Book Release Party and a Harry Potter Book Discussion. This spring they plan to sponsor several weekend programs for children of various ages. Throughout the years, the Friends of the Children’s Room have brought nationally-renowned children’s entertainers, singers, and performers to Pike County to engage children in reading and offer them a positive message. FCR is sponsoring a concert with award-winning singer/songwriter Steven Courtney scheduled for June, 2009.
